From barriers to independence: Scarlet’s journey into work with Connect to Work

Scarlet, a 20-year-old resident of Horley, Surrey, joined Surrey’s Connect to Work programme after experiencing barriers to employment due to hypermobility and a joint and muscle condition. Prior to engaging with the programme, Scarlet was NEET (not in education, employment or training), and was looking for support to help her move closer to the workplace and find a role that suited her abilities, interests and aspirations.

Scarlet decided to take part in Connect to Work because she wanted to gain employment, build her confidence and work towards greater independence. Whilst motivated to work, she faced challenges associated with her health condition, including finding a role that would accommodate her physical needs and provide the right level of support.

When she joined Connect to Work, Scarlet was allocated a dedicated Employment Specialist. This Employment Specialist worked closely with her to understand her strengths and interests and help identify a role that would be a good match for her specific skills and circumstances.

How it works

Scarlet initially completed a work experience placement with a local firm, Oven Fresh Bakery. Both Scarlet and Oven Fresh were delighted with how well the work experience went, and as a result Scarlet was offered a permanent part-time job with the firm. She now works for Oven Fresh based in a busy office canteen environment. She serves food and beverages, handles payment and supports customers throughout the day. The role provides a positive and supportive working environment and has been tailored to accommodate her physical needs, enabling her to perform her duties comfortably and successfully.

Scarlet found the process of finding employment through Connect to Work straightforward and supportive. Her dedicated Employment Specialist was on hand to give her encouragement, guidance and reassurance throughout each stage of her journey. The personalised approach helped her feel confident in pursuing opportunities that she may not otherwise have considered.

Since starting employment, Scarlet has made significant progress both personally and professionally. She has developed her confidence, gained valuable workplace experience and established a positive routine. Employment has provided her with greater independence, increased social interaction and the opportunity to contribute meaningfully within a team environment. She has settled well into her role and continues to receive positive feedback from colleagues, managers and customers. And her employer has been pleased with the contribution she has made and the positive attitude she brings to the workplace.

Reflecting on her experience, Scarlet said: “It’s a great team and working environment. I really enjoy my job and it’s going really well.”

Looking ahead, Scarlet hopes to continue developing her skills and experience within employment, increase her confidence further and continue building her independence. She is proud of what she has achieved and is excited about her future.

When asked what she would say to someone who is not sure whether Connect to Work is right for them, Scarlet said: “I’d definitely recommend it. The support helped me find a job that’s right for me and gave me the confidence to start working.”

Hundreds of young people with SEND explore their futures at Surrey County Council’s 2026 Transitions Fair

Hundreds of young people with additional needs explored their future opportunities at Surrey County Council’s 2026 Transitions Fair.

More than 300 young people attended the event, which brought together over 30 exhibitors and representatives from 19 schools across the county. Designed to support those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), the fair helped attendees better understand their options when moving from education into employment, further education, training or social settings.

Now in its second year, the event was held at the council’s Woodhatch Place headquarters in Reigate, and saw enthusiastic participation from young people aged 14 to 25. It was organised by Surrey Careers Hub, which works to connect schools and colleges with employers, helping to inspire and prepare the county’s future workforce.

Tim Oliver, Leader of Surrey County Council, shared his positive reflections on the success of the fair:
“The Transitions Fair is one element of Surrey’s education, skills and training offer for young people. Surrey County Council is committed to ensuring that every young person in Surrey, regardless of their educational needs, has access to the resources and support that will help them succeed, with no one left behind.
“It is inspiring to see so many young people actively exploring the range of options open to them for their future. I’m sure those attending left feeling inspired and enthused about their futures.”

Highlights of the fair

The event featured more than 30 exhibitors, including colleges, educators, employers, employment support organisations, apprenticeship providers and social settings. Each organisation was on hand to provide valuable advice and information, supporting attendees to make informed decisions about their next steps.

A bespoke film was also commissioned for the event, showcasing representatives involved in Surrey County Council’s facilities management contract. The film highlighted the people and roles that help keep Woodhatch Place a safe, welcoming and accessible environment. Through this, students were introduced to different career paths, learning how individuals entered their roles and how they continue to develop and progress in their careers.

Ahead of the fair, exhibitors were introduced to Understand Us, an organisation that draws on first-hand lived experience to help organisations improve services for customers and employees with a learning disability.

Feedback from attendees was overwhelmingly positive. One enthused student from The Park School commented: “Thank you so much. I loved it. I know so much more now about what I can do after school.”

A teacher from Oxted School said, “A fantastic opportunity for students who needed additional support and guidance about their future with some amazing exhibitors at hand, who had time to explain their products in a very patient and easy to understand manner.”

Exhibitors also praised the event, highlighting its accessibility and impact. A representative from Activate Learning commented: “Events like this play a vital role in ensuring career fairs are accessible to everyone, offering meaningful interactions and opportunities that are achievable for attendees.”
