Food Buyer Location: Surrey Salary: £40000 – £45000 Job Type: Full-time, Hybrid after probation We are seeking a highly skilled and effective Food Buyer to join a leading organisation in the food sector. This role involves sourcing, negotiating, and procuring food products, ingredients, and packaging materials, both locally and internationally to support operations. You will manage the import process, ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, and maintain cost-effective and timely supply. Day-to-day of the role: Procurement & Sourcing: Identify and evaluate suppliers of finished goods, raw materials, and packaging in line with quality and sustainability standards. Request, compare, and negotiate quotations to achieve optimal pricing and terms. Develop and implement category sourcing strategies for assigned product lines. Monitor market trends, commodity prices, and supplier performance to inform purchasing decisions. Supplier Relationship Management: Build and maintain strong relationships with key suppliers to ensure reliable supply and continuous improvement. Conduct regular supplier performance reviews focusing on quality, cost, and delivery. Stock Control: Support and provide guidance on inventory management across multiple warehouses. Review daily stock reports, investigate variances, and ensure corrective actions are taken promptly. Collaborate with Planning and Production teams to maintain optimal inventory levels, avoiding shortages or overstock. Import Management: Oversee all aspects of the import process, including purchase orders, shipping arrangements, customs documentation, and clearance. Manage freight forwarders, customs brokers, and suppliers to ensure timely and compliant importation of goods. Ensure compliance with food safety, customs, and import regulations in relevant markets. Review and optimise import-related costs such as freight, duty, and insurance. Cost & Process Control: Identify cost-saving opportunities. Ensure all purchasing activities comply with procurement policies and ethical standards. Required Skills & Qualifications: 1–3 years of experience in procurement or buying within the FMCG or food manufacturing sector. Experience with ERP systems Commercial acumen and cost awareness. Strong negotiation and analytical skills. Attention to detail and data-driven decision-making. Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
